Water, food, fire, and shelter are you basic necessities, so you want to make sure that you have those items covered when putting together survival kits. Depending on your scenario, one may be more important than the other. For example, if you are in sub-climate conditions, you should probably focus on fire and warmth first. If you’re lost in a desert, your first priority is water. Let’s take a moment to discuss the importance of each.
Water and food are simply a necessity. The average person can only survive three days without water and three weeks without food. If you don’t have any water, get some and get some fast. The hazards of dehydration will eventually result in a breakdown of every part of your body, leading to death, unless you re-hydrate yourself. Some food or water items found in wilderness survival kits include basic food, water canteens, water, and some type of water purification.
If your core body temperature drops only a few degrees, you risk hypothermia. This can happen from a number of ways, so make sure your wilderness survival kits include some way to create fire and get warm. You’ll want to make sure that you have some type of fire starting tool, proper clothing, an emergency blanket, and a poncho.
Survival kits must allow you the ability to have shelter to protect your for the elements, animals, or in certain cases, other people. If you don’t have the ability to have a tent, make sure that you have a knife and something to tie with such as rope, wire, or string. You may luck out and find a cave, but if not, you’ll be building your own shelter if you don’t have a tent. There are many methods, but this is almost impossible if a knife isn’t included with your wilderness survival kits.
You may want to find civilization, so make sure you wilderness survival kits include tools to accomplish this such as a signal mirror, whistle, or even a flare.
Other important survival items include a compass, first aid kit, and a multi-tool. In a worst case scenario, if I only had a multi-tool, I would find a way to survive. With this one tool, you can create weapons for hunting, build shelters, create fire, and so much more. This is my number one tool for my emergency kit.
